| The Barren Islands |
Last week Mike S and I went on a quick deer hunting trip to the North end of Shuyak Island. We only saw one deer - so the deer hunting was not very successful (more on this in another post). But the views, hiking, beach combing and weather was amazing. We also found a glass ball and collected on the order of 50 pounds of hedgehog mushrooms. I actually value hedgehog mushrooms over deer meat. So it was a very successful trip.
We camped on Perevalnie Passage and from there you can see both the snow-covered volcanos on the Alaska Peninsula, the Barren Islands, and even the Kenai Peninsula far to the north. Most of Shuyak is covered with spruce trees but the coastline near Perevalnie Passage is coastal tundra with patches of trees. There are huge cliffs, big waves and it is all very dramatic.
While there we hiked about 18 miles, and each hike was very different from the others. Our hike out to Point Banks was all cliff tops, crashing waves and whales spouting off shore. Then there was the hike down the East side where we found beaches covered in driftwood and marine debris. We also hiked up through the spruce trees to the alpine tundra on the top of the island. On Shuyak the spruce forest is very open with no alder or salmonberry thickets, and no devilsclub.
