Back from Inner Uyak Bay

 

I recently returned from an archaeological survey of inner Uyak Bay on Kodiak's West side. It was the usual spring survey with my inflatable kayaks accompanied by my friend Philip. On this trip we had pretty good weather and saw a lot of bears. 

Uyak Bay extends way into the interior of Kodiak and darn near cuts the island in half. When we were at the head of the bay we were almost on the East side of the island.  So from the water we could look straight up at some of the highest mountains on the island - soaring up from the water to over 4000 feet in a remarkably short distance. The snow capped mountains loomed over us.

It was a successful survey - we found 12 new sites and documented another 4 already known sites. We basically quadrupled the number of known sites in the inner bay. I'll show all the animals and talk about what we found in some upcoming posts. This post highlights the scenery.
