This past week we had a lovely return to winter reprieve. It was actually too cold and windy to climb the mountain and go downhill skiing. But it has been perfect for cross country skiing. Down in the trees the wind has been far calmer and the crust is solid and perfect for XC skiing.
Friday afternoon I had an epic skate ski on the crust at the pass, and then yesterday Nora and I drove over the pass and went classic skiing on the flats down by the Red Cloud. I was shocked how much snow there is down at sea level on the Anton Larsen Bay side of the island. And Nora and I drifted through the cottonwood trees while the dogs chased white rabbits.
Of course today it is pouring rain and 40 degrees. I fear the warm weather may put an end to the good XC skiing right down by the road. But at least it is snowing on high - fingers crossed!
