Pillar Ridge

For the past week I have been driving up to the top of Pillar Mountain behind town and hiking the ridge with the dogs.  It is a gorgeous hike.  On Labor Day I did the hike with Nora too, and we hiked all the way down the ridge to where you get to an overlook out over the Buskin River Valley.

This hike has a long history. An early Russian visitor Gavriil Davydov describes in his journal doing the same hike in 1803!

On Labor Day it was very windy and I made short videos of all the flowers, grass, and bushes blowing in the wind (see video below).  All of the fireweed and bunchberries have turned red.  Nora and I agreed that all the red leaves and berries look very 'Christmassy'.

And of course there are the windmills whirring away above us on the hike.  Gavriil would have been amazed by the windmills! You can hear the 'whirling' noise as they turn and even the sound of the blades cutting through the air.  And they are HUGE.

It is a good place to take the dogs for a hike.
