First Ice

Yesterday Nora, Stuey the dogs and I joined the cousins for a hike to the alpine to check on the ice.  There is marginal ice on some of the local ponds at sea level so we figured the ice would be even thicker on high.  And so up we hiked to a small pond in the alpine where Stuey, Nora and I found early ice last fall.

We arrived and found ice, but it was not much thicker than the ice at sea level.  Still it was thick enough for skating.  I even fell hard once and did not go through.  Also, since the pond is very shallow we figured if someone did fall in they would just be standing there, and could walk to shore.

So we skated for an hour or so in the sunshine with the mountains all around.  And today I might try the ice at sea level.
