Icy fog and sunshine

Yesterday after school Stuey and I went skiing.  It was a beautiful sunny day in town, but as we drove up towards the pass we noticed tendrils of fog oozing over through the low passes from the other side.  And then just before the pass we drove into the fog.  Ice fog.  All around us all the bushes were covered with frost.  We got out of the car and it was damp and chilly.  We were worried about getting cold.

As we climbed the mountain we noticed the sun burning through the fog and then we broke through into complete sunshine.  We could look down and see the dense fog in the valley floor.  Higher up looking west  it was all fog down below as far as we could see with just the mountains sticking up.  Back towards the car the fog was flowing through the pass like a river. Spilling down into the Buskin River valley towards town.

Up in the sunshine it was warm and there was very little wind.  It was completely different weather.  The ice fog has coated everything with frost.  The last time I went skiing it was all ice - so I was shocked to find that the skiing has improved.  There is now about a quarter inch of soft frost on the crust.  It actually makes for pretty nice skiing.  Of course there is no base to ski below about 1500 feet.  But the top is nice.

Then as we skied down the sun set.  And by the time we got to the fog it had already set.  Walking into the fog was like entering a refrigerator - it got cold and clammy all at once.  We hiked on down through the fog and frost back to the car.  Daily dog/walk ski complete.
