Nora spotted (and ate) her first ripe salmonberry today - I haven't seen any berries even close to this ripe |
Tomorrow the kids and I are leaving the island for a (gasp!) vacation. I haven't left the island in like a year and a half and am actually a lot more nervous than usual. I'm worried that things 'outside' will have changed so much with COVID and all that I'll be a bit lost in the 'real world'. I'm also a bit worried about how hot it'll be - I have been liking Kodiak's temperatures in the 50's just fine. Rain and summer cool is just fine by me!
But it will be good to go where it is hot, and to drive on freeways, visit huge malls and buy stuff, and get 'surrounded in sound' in the cities. And we'll also be seeing family. That's really the whole point of the trip. Nora and Stuey are super excited, and I am too. But I can't wait to get the first day of travel under the belt before I can truly relax. Funnily enough I'm more nervous for this trip than I was for going to Sitkinak Island back in May. And on that trip I had to pack perfectly, no idea what I was to encounter, and there were no stores or local support if forgot something or got into trouble. But on Sitkinak I was also in my element.
Tomorrow we are off the Rock. Summer vacation here we come!
