Swimming the Thoroghfare

We are on our way home now.  At the moment we are hanging out in a quiet corner of the SeaTac airport waiting for our flight to Alaska.  The D20's gate area annex is a secret gem if you are ever stuck on a long lay over at SeaTac.  Incredible to believe but just a few days ago Nora and I swam the Fox Island Thoroughfare with my sister and Jose.

The Thoroughfare is a .35 mile wide channel that separates North Haven Island from Vinalhaven.  Back in the day we used to swim across it all the time.  And one summer we really trained hard and had planned to swim from North Haven Island 10 miles or so across the West Penobscot Bay to the mainland.  It never happened - if I remember correctly more from a fear of sharks than from a fear of cold water or lack of fitness.

In any case, my sister Polly suggested we do some cold water swimming and I kind of liked the idea.  One day we swam along the North Haven shore from my mom's dock to the 'Casino'.  And then on a subsequent rainy day we recruited Nora and Jose and swam the thoroughfare.

It was just as I remembered it!  So happy that Nora got to do it!
