Yesterday I played with the aperture settings on my camera. Nora and I went for a walk with the doggies and then paddle boarding. Of course it was cloudy in the morning when we were out and about and got sunny in the evening.
Anyway, I used to play with the aperture settings on my camera a lot more than I do now. These days more often than not I'll close it down (high aperture setting like f11 or f16) to increase the depth of field and try and get everything in the photo in focus. I've ruined a lot of berry or flower pictures because the wrong parts were out of focus. But I also know that a short depth of field makes the things that are in focus pop out against the blurry background.
So yesterday I tried taking a bunch of pictures with the lens wide open (low aperture like f1.4 or f1.8) to try and decrease the depth of field. I've done this before and I remember that I've had to throw a lot of pictures away. For instance, I'd get the dogs eyes in focus but his nose completely blurry - I expected to throw away a lot of pictures.
And it's true I did have to throw away a lot of pictures, but I also got some very good ones. Doggie poses that are far more interesting because the background is out of focus!
