Ray, Mike and I returned Friday from a deer and goat hunt to Kodiak's South End. But until now I have not had a chance to post on the trip because we were too busy processing and packaging up all the meat. We ended up with 150 pounds of very high quality packaged meat.
We found that all of the big deer were hanging out in herds on the very tippy tops of the local mountains. So our daily routine was to climb up a mountain and find the herds. So beautiful to be up at dawn and hiking up into the south end high country. This part of Kodiak is largely treeless and very different from the North end of Kodiak. It was not completely covered in ice during the last glaciation. Basically at that time the mountains were all islands and the valleys glacially dammed lakes.
During our trip the willows were at peak yellow, the bearberry leaves at their most vivid red, and the alders all still green. All of the ferns and pushki had died back and the salmonberries had lost their leaves and so the hiking was pretty easy.
In the next couple of days I'll post a bunch more pictures from our trip - so stay tuned!
Patrick
