Harvesting Elk

These are the elk we saw on the hunt.  We found the herd on the first day and harvested 2 - a bull and a cow.  What's funny is that unlike last year we did not see any satellite bulls hanging out away from the herd.  All the elk were bunched up close together in one spot.

I figure we carried around 500 pounds of elk and bone off of the mountain.  Then after butchering it back home - removing the bones, trimming off the smelly stuff and fat - we ended up with about 400 pounds of packaged meat.  Pretty good meat haul!

Look at Brooks' eyes - that's the '6 miles to go to the boat and over a mountain with a heavy pack' look
