The food in Japan was amazing and so much more than just sushi and sashimi. In fact, I don't even remember eating a classic sushi roll. The variety is amazing and there are all these little local products. Each region of Japan is famous for its own particular products and food. I think my favorite were all the pickled and fermented foods. I particularly liked the burdock roots and greens for breakfast. I even started to eat salads at breakfast - they served it so hey. why not?
Funnily enough the one thing I did start to tire of was the fishy bonito flakes and some of the other 'fishy' offerings. But I fully realize that Japanese food without the seafood would not be Japanese food!
Even cheap, sidewalk type food was excellent. Even bar food!
One of the best meals we had was on our first night in Tokyo. Nora and I wandered around the neighborhood to eat and were having a difficult time finding a place to eat. In Japan many of the restaurants do not open until 5:30 PM. We found a super fancy place and decided to just go for it. We got the fixed menu and they brought out the different dishes. It was AMAZING - the best sashimi I have eaten in my entire life. But I was a little worried about the bill. And then the bill came out to around 130 dollars (with beer). It was basically the cost of the local Japanese restaurant we have here on Kodiak, but no where near as fancy. And it also turned out to be our most expensive meal on the trip.
