Deer 'Hunting'
Ever since the beginning of August and the start of Kodiak's deer season it has been so foggy and rainy that I have not had a chance to hunt deer in my usual way. At this time of year I usually climb a mountain, camp and shoot a buck in the morning. On clear mornings in the alpine you generally can see 20 or more deer wandering about in the bowls and you get your pick of big bucks. But this does not work if it is foggy and you can't see anything.
So when the soccer coaches expressed an interest in going deer hunting I thought, 'why not? - let's try car hunting and Stuey can come along too.' And so off to the range we went to try our hands at blasting cans and targets. Stuey LOVED shooting the 22, and so did the coaches. On the drive in and out from the range we kept sharp eyes peeled for deer in the bushes! We were hunting for deer.
Later after a short hike to place where I have seen spikes in the past (last year's Community Archaeology dig site - see post from last year click here) We actually ran into a deer. I think everyone was amazed that there was a deer where I said there would be a deer. Only the deer was a doe and we are only allowed to shoot bucks, and so we walked back to the car without meat.
This is not the way I usually hunt deer. My method is typically more active. But it is foggy again today and the Pathfinder has a full tank of gas. I think we might try it again today, and who knows we may even harvest a deer! Patrick
