After 3 nights at the Tulemar Hotel in Manuel Antonio we moved further south to the Osa Peninsula and finished our Costa Rica vacation with 4 nights at the Lapa Rios hotel. The Lapa Rios hotel is set in the rain forest high above a beach with a spectacular view out over the ocean. The hotel is well known as a pioneer in the sustainable 'eco' tourism industry.
In addition to the normal jungle walks, night hikes and bird watching tours, the hotel also offered tours of the local schools, tree planting, plantlore hikes and even tours of their own facility (where they feed the hotel food scraps to their pigs and then use the manure to make gas and power the staff kitchen).
The rooms were spacious but no air conditioning, and only one plug for charging things up. I really liked it. Best of all they only had one spot where there is Wifi - it was sort of like a 'smoking shack'. They strongly encouraged their guests to unplug!
The food was amazing! And every night they offered different local vegetables, fruit and foods. One night they even had a local lady hand making and baking tortillas for the guests. Their salads with beets, fruit and even ceviche were really innovative and good. Patrick
