One of the best things about a vacation on an island in Maine is the picnics. Practically every day of the vacation we took a boat ride to some remote beach for a picnic. The picnics were very much impromptu affairs. We'd make up sandwiches, a cooler of ice tea, put on the sunscreen and go! They also tended to be on the short side. Land on the beach, eat, explore and swim for a bit, and then head home. Just about perfect.
One of the picnics was to Calderwood Island in uncle John's motorboat - 'the buffalo soldier'. I had not been to Calderwoods in years. I remember going to the same beach as a child and snorkeling for quohog clams that my grandfather, much to our delight and awe, ate raw on the beach. I also remember that the water was freezing. Calderwoods Island is on the outer coast and closer to the much colder deep ocean water.
Granny Cocoa, Cocoa the dog, Aunt Polly and Uncle John, and cousin Sam also came along on the picnic. It was a crowded boat! But the day perfect with flat calm seas.
Stuey just saw the top picture and commented, 'that water was cold - I was pretending for the camera that it was warm, but it wasn't'. So some things do not change. On this picnic after eating we found a high rock with a cliff into deep water and spent an hour or so leaping off into the deep water (photos to follow in another post - but see bottom photo). The water was cold but after a few leaps you sort of got used to it. Next time we will have to bring our snorkeling gear.
