Granny Coco

One of the 'main' reasons we go to Maine is to see Granny Coco and her dog Phoebe.  My mom always cooks us up amazing meals, and sometimes we play scrabble before and after dinner. There are also walks. And this year we got to check out the new digs at Hopkins Point.

What's funny is that when my mom was a kid she stayed in the same house where Stuey and I have been staying. That house is 'Granny Thurby's' house. My Granny Thurby had a Newfoundland dog named Thurber - hence the name. I noticed that there is still a picture of the dog Thurber above the fireplace in the dining room.  By the time I could remember dog names Thurber was already long dead, and my grandmother's current dog was a Newfoundland named Muskie. But it was the earlier dog whose sobriquet stuck with my grandmother.

My mother got her nickname 'Granny Coco' in the same way. When my kids were little she had a dog named Coco. So my kids called her Granny Coco. Now her dog is named Phoebe but the nickname remains the same.
